Snowflake Configuration Jumpstart
A consistent account structure, configured with Terraform
On this page
Start with a structure your team can explain
The Snowflake Configuration Jumpstart establishes namespaces, basic role-based access control and foundational security configuration using repeatable patterns.
Databases, warehouses, roles and grants are defined in Terraform so changes can be reviewed and repeated. Your team starts with a consistent structure across environments and a record of how it was configured.

From a declaration to a configured account
What the Jumpstart does, in the order it does it.
Describe the environments
Agree the naming convention and environment boundaries, then declare the databases and warehouses in configuration.
Terraform builds the account
Databases, warehouses, roles and grants are created from that declaration, the same way every time, and tracked as code from then on.
A namespace and role hierarchy you can explain
Loaders write to raw, models build into edw, analysts read from marts. Production follows the same structure with separate grants that your team can review.
environments = ["dev", "prd"]databases = ["raw", "edw"]warehouses = { elt = { size = "XSMALL", auto_suspend = 60 } analyst = { size = "XSMALL", auto_suspend = 60 }}

Configuration Components
Namespace Organization
Use a consistent naming scheme for databases, schemas and environments so their purpose is clear.
- Database and schema naming conventions
- Environment separation (dev/staging/prod)
- Logical data organization patterns
Basic Role-Based Access Control
Define basic roles and grants for loading, transforming and reading data.
- Essential user roles and permissions
- Basic security policies
- Foundational access patterns
Environment Configuration
Separate development, staging and production, with their own configuration and access rules.
- Dev/staging/prod environment setup
- Environment-specific configurations
- Basic governance controls
Terraform-Based Automation
Infrastructure-as-code approach using Terraform for reproducible, version-controlled configurations.
- Version-controlled configuration management
- Automated deployment and updates
- Consistent environments across dev/staging/prod
Why Configuration Matters
Know where things belong
A shared naming scheme makes it easier to place new objects, find existing ones and understand which environment they belong to.
Foundation for Growth
Reuse the configuration as you add datasets, warehouses and users, with changes reviewed in code.
Patterns from delivery experience
Start with patterns refined across dozens of Snowflake deployments, adapted to your account and team.
